Chuck Holding 'em

My name is Arthur Charles Knutson, Jr., but those who know me call me Chuck (that’s how I separate out telemarketers and eliminate them). I received a B.A. in Environmental Biology (marine emphasis) at U.C. Santa Barbara in 1968 and an M.S. in Fisheries Biology from HSU in 1975. I was in the Coop Fish Unit, where I completed an MS Thesis entitled, "Biology of Summer Steelhead in Mad River, California." In between, I spent 3 years in the Peace Corps in the State of Bihar, India, training Indian high school science teachers how to teach the practical side of science. In short, that’s when I "really" grew up. Upon my return, I had two fabulous years as a CDFG seasonal aide on the Hat Creek Wild Trout Project and the Bay-Delta Adult Striped Bass Study before going to HSU.

After HSU, I was hired by CDFG as a biologist in Monterey to set up a marine/estuarine water quality monitoring program. I have worked for CDFG as a biologist for 28 years in Marine Resources Region, Bay-Delta Fisheries Project, Anadromous Fisheries Branch, Inland Fisheries Division, and most recently, Lands and Facilities Branch, Sacramento, where I am the Statewide Fish Hatchery Coordinator for 22 State-operated hatcheries (8 anadromous and 14 trout), email cknutson@dfg.ca.gov . In 1976, I married Bellory Fong, a biologist with DWR Delta Studies and now with the CALFED Habitat Restoration Program. We live in Sacramento and have two children, Kyle, 22, and Leanne, 18. Kyle recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz and is working at Eagle Lake. Leanne is a freshman at Sacramento City College and lives at home. I fish for a wide variety of fish species with various styles. Lately, my favorites are tuna, ocean salmon, and striped bass, although halibut, rockfish, trout, black bass, steelhead, and American shad also get my attention. I wade, float tube, and have a 15’ Klamath boat. Other hobbies include Japanese taiko drumming and coaching and playing basketball.
